Notes & News from the Cathedral of Saint James, South Bend
on the Weekend of the Third Sunday of Easter

The Dean's List

Last Week Today
And what a week it was!

One: thank you so much to everyone who welcomed my parents last weekend, both at the Friday Noon Eucharist and traditional Simeri’s luncheon following, and on Sunday morning. It was a grand celebration of their 65th wedding anniversary.

Two: Brother Sun, Sister Moon. What are the chances of a crystal clear, cloudless day in Northern Indiana on any given April 8? Probably better than I think, but nevertheless, what an spectacular convergence of fair weather and celestial event! I was arriving at Midway Airport just as the eclipse started and was, therefore, inside for much of it. Blessedly, two very assertive (and very kind) airport mobility assistants who escorted my parents to their gate wheeled my parents to a good vantage point and asked so other very kind and accommodating people to step aside so they could get a look, which they did (as did I). As we Episcopalians expected, there was no rapture, apocalypse, or dire portents, just a pretty cool light show.

Three: Surgeries. Dr. Steven Wietstock on Monday, Canon Clay Berkley on Wednesday, and me on Friday. All were successful by early indications. Deacon Clay and I will be out of action this weekend (he may be in a pew, but I’m not yet mobile). Canon Henry Randolph will preside and preach at both services with the able assistance of Deacon Anne Wietstock, whose surgery is scheduled for June.

Four: Discretionary Tales. This past week a guy who has been a regular at our door in the past stopped by seeking assistance. I hadn’t seen him for awhile because, as he explained, he had been a guest at the St. Joseph County Jail for the past several months. During his incarceration, his wife died. Her sister called me back in January to let me know her death was imminent and I had gone to see her in hospice, so I was able to convey something of how her final days had gone to her husband. He had also come on this day to let me know that his mother had just died, and to ask if there were any way I could help him buy proper clothes for her funeral. Given the way our discretionary disbursements now work - with all of our available funds given away on the first Wednesday of any given month - I really had nothing available. I do, however, always hold some back for occasions such as this, and while I told him that I could offer him assistance, I could give him an honorarium if he were interested in singing at Vespers on Thursday. He agreed, and I wrote him a check, wrote down the details for Vespers, and - on the rainy, cold day that Thursday was - figured he wasn’t going to make it. I was wrong about that. Just as we were wrapping up the service, the Cathedral doors opened and in he walked. He knew he was going to be late, he said, but God told him to come anyway. He gave the four of us there assembled a bit of testimony before singing in his beautiful baritone “One day at a time, Lord, one day at a time;” words of a raw and real faith lived out as best he can in each passing moment. It was poignant, and it was beautiful. I will write a fuller account of that evening sometime but for now, suffice it to say, the Holy Spirit showed up once again through your generosity and in the testimony of a homeless man.

Five: Dr. Kyle Lambelet has been appointed to the faculty at Virginia Theological Seminary in Alexandria, Virginia. Read about it here. Please keep Kyle, Nicole, Garren, and Naomi in your prayers as their journey to Atlanta draws to a close and a new adventure in the greater Washington D.C. area begins.

Six: Dianne Hoist will soon move to Seattle, Washington to take up residence with her son and his family. Her last Sunday at the Cathedral will be April 21. Please keep her in your prayers and, if you get a chance, give her a hug or a card (or both).

Seven: Andrea Dudeck posted on Facebook yesterday that her mother, Gina Bizzaro-Dudeck, is struggling once again following her second surgery. Please double down on prayers for Gina. I will keep you apprised.

And Eight: After 44 years in business, Simeri’s Old Town Tap, the go-to haunt of the Friday “James Gang” for the past 14 years, will close at the end of April. Our last Friday lunch at Simeri’s will happen on April 26. Yes, it conflicts with the Big Provincial Gathering; we’ll figure out a way to make it work.

Big Provincial Gathering Volunteers
The Province V BPG is nearly here, setting up on Wednesday, April 24 and Thursday April 25 with some pre-event meetings and then hitting full stride on Friday, April 26 and Saturday, April 27 with events scheduled at the Cathedral, St. Margaret's House, and First Presbyterian Church. We continue to be  in need of volunteers to serve as hospitality coordinators on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday (talk to Betsy VanderBurg), and parking stewards on Friday and Saturday (talk to me).

We are also in need of great, tremendous, desperate, urgent, etc. need of childcare, which is a paid position. Childcare workers need to be 18+ years old and Safe Church trained. We need teams of two from 11 am to 4 pm on Friday, 4 pm - 9 pm on Friday, and 9 am - 1 pm on Saturday. If you are interested, please let me know asap.

Sunday Adult Forum: Wholehearted Faith
Rachel Held Evans with Jeff Chu

Rachel Held Evans was a bright light who challenged and inspired many in our walk with Christ. After two Sundays off for Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday, we will continue to listen to audio excerpts from her posthumously released book, Wholehearted Faith, and discuss what we have heard. Here is the proposed schedule through April:

April 14: Chapter 2 - led by Tamisyn Grantz
April 21: Earth Day Breakfast in the Butterfly Garden
April 28: Chapter 3

Blessings,
Brian
