The Weekend of The Tenth Sunday after Pentecost
(Year C, Proper 15, Track 2)
August 17, 2025
The Dean's List
The Feast of Saint Mary the Virgin
Today (Friday, August 15) we celebrate the Feast of Saint Mary the Virgin, mother of our Lord Jesus Christ. Canon Tina Velthuizen will preach and preside for our observance at the Noon Eucharist. And - if you're interested - join the lunch bunch at Grill 362 afterwards.
Wedding Weekend
My niece, Eli Ford, is getting married to a wonderful young man - Reid Homan - in Fort Wayne this weekend, so I'm off to exotic Allen County for the festivities, at which I will preside and preach, in addition to being Uncle Brian. One more wedding to go after this (my son, Nathan, and Mackenzie Keller in New York City on September 6).
Fr. Mark Hummell will preach and preside at both services at the Cathedral this Sunday.
Liz & Tom Burman's Sabbatical Year
Liz Burman's last Sunday as Senior Warden of the Cathedral of Saint James is coming up on August 24. Please join us at the 10:30 service to celebrate her extraordinary ministry and to send the Burmans eastward for a year-long sabbatical residency.
Hal Culbertson will serve as the interim Senior Warden until February 28, 2026.
Rats!
There was an incident a few weeks back in which a four-legged critter attempted to gnaw on a very displeased meeting attendee in the Conference Room. Fortunately, the critter did not break the skin AND we were able to capture the critter in a live trap that same day. The critter, upon closer examination, was a baby rat, who is now living in captivity at the Craker residence for observation (thank you, Crakers!). I am happy to report that both the nibblee and the nibbler are healthy.
In response to this verminous incursion, the Cathedral's pest control service was contacted immediately and additional anti-rodent measures have been implemented. I'm telling you this because the bait boxes are very much in evidence around the building; please do not disturb them. I'm also telling you this because - to date - that is the one and only rat we've ever seen in the building, so hopefully she (Dr. Craker is pretty sure she's a she) was a stray.
On top of the pest counter-measures, we will no longer permit the back door at the kitchen to be propped open for any longer than it takes to do a trash run or unload supplies. We are also asking any group that serves food to remove any trash they may produce and wash all dishes following their meeting or event.
Just a reminder pertaining that last point: we don't have a sexton, so there is no one whose job it is to do dishes. Please do your part in keeping the Cathedral clean.
COVID
There seems to be a very mild but very contagious strain of COVID floating around right now. Please be mindful of any symptoms and take care of yourself (and the community) accordingly.
And on a Positive Note...
Children's formation leaders and Fr. Mark Hummell have been working through the summer to re-imagine our ministry with children. Changes are coming that will address the needs of children and parents alike. Stay tuned!
Blessings,
Brian

Cathedral Prayer List
Collect for Saint Mary
O God, you have taken to yourself the blessed Virgin Mary, mother of your incarnate Son: Grant that we, who have been redeemed by his blood, may share with her the glory of your eternal kingdom; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
Collect for Proper 15
Almighty God, you have given your only Son to be for us a sacrifice for sin, and also an example of godly life: Give us grace to receive thankfully the fruits of his redeeming work, and to follow daily in the blessed steps of his most holy life; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
