LETTER FROM THE DEAN

Dear Members and Friends of The Cathedral of Saint James,

We are thrilled to introduce "Gather and Grow," a capital campaign focused on making our gathering spaces more accessible and functional for all. Our priority project is to add an elevator to our church, fulfilling a dream our congregation has held for seven decades. As we embark on this campaign, we are not only building for the present but also for the generations that come after us.

Placement of the elevator on the south side of Cathedral House will make every classroom, office, gathering, and worship space accessible to everyone - including people with mobility challenges, parents with strollers, and anyone else for whom stairs are a challenge. By making our spaces fully accessible for the first time, our new elevator - along with other planned renovations - will unlock new possibilities for hosting community partners and events, allowing us to expand our mission as a Cathedral church and our engagement with downtown South Bend.

Founded in 1868, Saint James is the oldest Episcopal congregation in South Bend with one of the oldest church buildings in continuous use by any denomination in the city. As an urban Cathedral, we are committed to serving three ever-broadening circles: the people who live and work in downtown South Bend; church members who gather in-person and online from a wide geographic area; and the 31 faith communities in the Diocese of Northern Indiana. Our members represent the human panoply, with a wide mix of age, worship styles, ethnicity, sexual orientation, education, and occupation.

It is our hope, our calling, and our privilege to invite all to gather and grow with us in the Name of Jesus Christ.

Brian Grantz,
Dean and Rector
