Mission

The Episcopal Cathedral Church of St. James, South Bend, is the Cathedral Church for the Diocese of Northern Indiana, located in the Central Deanery of the diocese, and Province V of the Episcopal Church.  The Episcopal Church is itself one of 38 member churches in the Anglican Communion.

St. James is an urban parish established in a church of Gothic Revival architecture, located in downtown South Bend.  The members of St. James are called upon to be both parish and Cathedral and we perceive many functions for and responsibilities to our urban community and ourselves.  Among them are:

  • Provide a place of worship that is accessible and functional.

  • Provide a place for diocesan events that is not only functional but enhances the interest across the Diocese in making a pilgrimage to the Cathedral.

  • Provide resources for community functions (especially service organizations) consistent with our role as a member of the downtown South Bend community.

  • Provide opportunities and facilities for Christian education.

  • Be welcoming and open to all, an urban oasis.

  • Encourage the ministry of the baptized.

  • Maintain and enhance our facilities for the ministry of future generations.

Core Values

By the power of the Holy Spirit and a passion for the Gospel, we are called to be both Parish and Cathedral.  With a commitment to one another, we will love and serve each other by having a willingness to do whatever it takes to bear witness to Christ.
