The Weekend of the First Sunday of Advent
(Year A, Advent 1)

November 30, 2025

The Dean's List

Advent
The first Sunday of Advent marks the beginning of the new Church year. This new season is marked in worship with a change to purple vestments and paraments, the presence of an Advent wreath, and readings (in Lectionary Year A) from Matthew’s Gospel. Unlike the world around us wherein Christmas celebrations are in full swing, our  focus through the first part of Advent is decidedly apocalyptic, pointing towards the coming calamity, trial, and tribulation that warn us of the harrowing, yet logical, conclusion of   human history. The hope of Advent is the coming of Christ, both looking forward to the triumph of Love in the eternal reign of Christ (eschatology) and looking backward to the coming of Christ into the world in Jesus’ birth in Bethlehem (incarnation). Advent is truly supposed to be a season of watching, waiting, and preparing. I am not so naïve to think we can set cultural Christmas aside in a beautifully wrapped box until December 25, but please take time to pray, to ponder, to prepare, to slow down in order to focus on the coming of Christ into the world.

Blessings,
Brian

Cathedral Prayer List

Collect for the First Sunday of Advent

Almighty God, give us grace to cast away the works of darkness, and put on the armor of light, now in the time of this mortal life in which your Son Jesus Christ came to visit us in great humility; that in the last day, when he shall come again in his glorious majesty to judge both the living and the dead, we may rise to the life immortal; through him who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
