An Outpouring of Grace
This past week the Cathedral received contributions of (at least) $5,500 for the clergy discretionary fund. I am deeply moved by the compassion and generosity of those in our congregation (and beyond!) for the plight of our neighbors who are bearing the brunt of the current budget impasse. The fifty+ people who were waiting at our door at 8:30 am on Assistance Day this past Wednesday—many of whom had been there since the middle of the night—let out a cheer when we announced we would be doubling our assistance to help sixty people this month to do what we could in this crisis of hunger and hardship. As Al Whitfield, Rick Hilliard, Joe Anand-Obleton, and I met and prayed with each person in line, their gratitude was as genuine as their needs were great.
Here is one quick story. A women came in wearing a cast on one of her arms. "Where there's a cast, there's a story," I said. Well, indeed there was. She had been hit by a car while riding her bike (her only means of transportation) a few weeks ago. She rolled up the hood and over the car before falling to the street, but was grateful to God that she only broke her arm. Earlier this year there was a house fire where she was living, but was grateful to God that she got out without being harmed. She has been working a recovery program from substance abuse for a few years, and was grateful to God that this year's trials and hardships have not tempted her back into addiction. After praying together I told her, "You have overcome more difficulty in the past few years than I have known in my entire life. You are an amazing person." She smiled and said, "Thank you for saying that."
Is there more to her story? Of course. But, Good Lord, what wonder can be found when we take the time to listen.
Blessings,
Brian

Cathedral Prayer List
Collect for Proper 27
O God, whose blessed Son came into the world that he might destroy the works of the devil and make us children of God and heirs of eternal life: Grant that, having this hope, we may purify ourselves as he is pure; that, when he comes again with power and great glory, we may be made like him in his eternal and glorious kingdom; where he lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
Stewardship Prayer
God, our Creator, may our gifts honor the work you have given us to do here in this place. May we bless, break, and share our offerings of time, talent, and treasure with our neighbors, proclaiming the Good News to the world in all we say and do. Amen.
