Assistance Ministry
8.8% of all Indiana residents receive SNAP benefits (aka food stamps). 1 in 5 South Bend residents receive SNAP benefits; TWENTY percent. For those at the margins, the suspension of SNAP benefits at midnight on October 31 as a result of the impasse in federal budget funding will be devastating, impacting not only food security, but mental health and community safety and stability, as well.
The Cathedral of Saint James already provides $1,500 in direct assistance to the poor on the first Wednesday of each month. We also - thanks to the efforts Al & Norris Whitfield and the Fellowship of St. John - provide 50 boxed breakfasts on assistance day, which is also funded through the Clergy Discretionary Fund.
After some conversation with the Cathedral clergy team, several colleagues in the Diocese of Northern Indiana, and a very brief consultation with Katie Elliot at St. Margaret's House, it is our intention to double our monthly monetary assistance until SNAP benefits are restored. How? Well, the current balance in the Clergy Discretionary Fund will cover two months. Bishop Sparks and the Diocesan Council announced today that reserve funds are being made available for feeding ministries in our diocese, so we will be applying for a grant to help us extend this ministry. Beyond that, it will depend upon the generosity of the (already generous) community.
I have never been truly hungry a day in my life. Neither, to my knowledge, have those who are forcing this issue. I am absolutely sure that such hunger leads to levels of despair that no human being should ever know. That this is happening for absolutely no good reason in a time and place of such extraordinary abundance is unconscionable. So we're going to do what we can, because What Would Jesus Do is not even really a question here.
The Labyrinth
One of the last remaining Gather & Grow projects is the labyrinth and sidewalks planned for the garden. We were hoping that materials for the labyrinth would be delivered in early November and installed by the end of the year but, alas, our timing was poor. The Labyrinth Company (really, that's what it's called) recently updated our landscaper, John Pemberton, that they received many more orders than expected this fall, which is pushing our delivery date to December. Should the weather be unusually clement, installation this year may be possible. If not, Mr. Pemberton has promised that we will be first in line next spring.
Keep It, Store It, Give It Away, Throw It Away
If you have an hour or three to come by the Cathedral on Saturday, November 1, we will be here for Round Two of our Sort It & Label it work amid the Cathedral's copious cabinets, closets, and cubbies. Come on by!
Move It
If you have an hour or three to come by the Cathedral on Saturday, November 8, we could sure use your help loading stuff, moving it to Souith Bend City Church, and unloading it there for storage during St. Margaret's House's upcoming Cathedral residency.
Fall Back!
Daylight Saving Time ends this weekend. Don't forget to turn your clocks back one hour before going to bed on Saturday!
All That and More
Check out the graphics below for information about our stewardship event next Thursday, our celebration with St. Margaret's House of the Feast of St. Margaret of Scotland on Friday, November 14, and much more besides.
Blessings,
Brian

Collect for All Saints Day
Almighty God, you have knit together your elect in one communion and fellowship in the mystical body of your Son Christ our Lord: Give us grace so to follow your blessed saints in all virtuous and godly living, that we may come to those ineffable joys that you have prepared for those who truly love you; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen.
Stewardship Prayer
God, our Creator, may our gifts honor the work you have given us to do here in this place. May we bless, break, and share our offerings of time, talent, and treasure with our neighbors, proclaiming the Good News to the world in all we say and do. Amen.
