Prayers for Brittany San Felipe
Brittany San Felipe, daughter of Erica Vitale, was involved in a serious car accident this morning in New Jersey that left her pinned between the steering wheel and the seat. She was taken by ambulance to an area hospital. Please keep Brittany, her wife Cheska and daughter Cali (who were NOT involved in the accident), and her entire family in your prayers.
Ever So Briefly
There is much to suggest that human beings are moving too fast right now. For the entirety of human history up until the industrial revolution - only 150 years ago, give or take - human beings moved only as fast as our feet, our mounts, or the wind could carry us. Technological advances have allowed us to speed up exponentially. While there is much wonder and benefit to the speed at which we can move and share information, there is also a clear shadow side. Modern transportation is efficient, but it does not allow us to take in landscapes in any detail. Likewise, with modern communication the constant barrage of information does not allow time for reflection and contemplation, which makes us quite susceptible to misinformation, disinformation, and manipulation.
Things that move faster than the speeds for which they are designed eventually shake apart. Human beings were built to walk and ponder. For the sake of our relationships, for the sake of our country, for the sake of our souls: we need to slow down. Walk outside; it is restorative. Be very skeptical of news on social media; it is curated and calculated. Resolve to have conversations, not make assumptions. Spend quiet time in prayer daily to hear the Word and discern the will of our loving and generous God.
Prayer Vigils
In the graphics below, you will see two upcoming opportunities to join with people of many faith traditions in prayer for migrants, immigrants, and refugees.
The first vigil will take place near the Miami Correctional Facility in Bunker Hill, Indiana on Monday, September 29, beginning at 2 pm. The Episcopal Church in Indiana will serve as host for this event in partnership with the United Methodist Church.
Bishop Sparks recently wrote:
"According to the CATO Institute, '65 percent of people taken by ICE had no convictions, 93 percent no violent convictions.' The language being used related to the use of the Miami Correctional Facility for immigrant detainees is deeply troubling. We also pray and urge our elected leaders to pursue transparency, accountability, and policies rooted in compassion and justice.
"Leaders from the Episcopal Diocese of Indianapolis and Northern Indiana are hosting this vigil, which will welcome other faith traditions. The gathering will include Scripture readings, songs, and prayer calling for compassion, dignity, and justice for immigrants and refugees. Those in attendance will stand in prayerful solidarity with the immigrant communities and call attention to the urgent need for humane treatment of all people.
"We will gather to pray for those who are detained, for their families, and for a system that better reflects mercy, justice, and love.
"Community members, people of all faiths, and the public are invited to attend. Clergy are invited to wear clergy collars and red stoles."
The second vigil will take place at the Church of Our Lady of Loretto on the campus of Saint Mary's College on Sunday, October 5, beginning at 3 pm. This service - hosted by the Sisters of the Holy Cross - will include Scripture readings, prayers, music, and personal stories.
All are welcome.
Nan Noecker Internship
Part of the formation process to become a deacon is a requirement to serve a six-month internship at a parish other than your own. Nan Noecker will begin her internship at St. Michael & All Angels Church in South Bend on Wednesday, October 1 and continuing through Easter Sunday: April 5, 2026. Join us on Sunday, September 28 for Prayers for Sending as Nan - who has been a Cathedral member for 45 years! - takes her leave.
Joe's Getting Hip
Parish Administrator Joe Anand-Obleton will undergo hip replacement surgery this coming Wednesday. He will be out of the office and unavailable for at least two weeks post-surgery, returning to his desk when his surgeon gives the all-clear to resume his duties. Please keep Joe (and Michael) in your prayers!
Office Volunteers
Directly related to the information above... we are seeking volunteers to staff the Joe's desk in the office. If you have a morning or two you can give us (Tuesday through Friday, 9 am - Noon), please click here to sign up. Thank you!
All Static & Noise
Mary Kenney texted me yesterday to let me know about the 2023 documentary film "All Static & Noise" that will be showing at the Browning Cinema at the DeBartolo Performing Arts Center on 6:30 pm on Wednesday, October 8. The film - made by a good friend and classmate of Mary's - tells the story of the Uighers in China. Click here for more information.
Blessings,
Brian

Collect for Proper 19
Grant us, Lord, not to be anxious about earthly things, but to love things heavenly; and even now, while we are placed among things that are passing away, to hold fast to those that shall endure; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
