Christian Formation for Children
The importance of immersing children in the love of God in Jesus Christ and the way of life imagined by our Baptismal Covenant cannot be overstated. The values, beliefs, and behaviors of parents and other significant adults imprint upon children from the day they are born (and probably before...), so an intentional effort must be made to teach and model the Christian faith with children from the start. This is fundamental to our work as a church.

As in all things, however, the church also needs to adapt to the present needs and circumstances of its people. To that end, Fr. Mark Hummell and our team of formation leaders and parents took time over the summer to discuss what was working and where we were struggling with children's ministry. The chief concerns were a lack of consistency in attendance at formation and the amount of time kids were being asked to be present and attentive every Sunday morning - generally speaking around three hours. Our first efforts at adapting to this is threefold:

  1. Offer a great program for children once a month. Rather than weekly "Sunday School," our children's formation team will focus on hosting "Through the Years" for children AND adults once each month in the 9:15 to 10:15 Sunday morning hour. Through the Years will be focus on a seasonal theme. Additionally, those Sundays will feature a kid-friendly song or two at the 10:30 service.

  2. Involve children more in worship. Children will be offered the chance each Sunday to help light candles and carry the special offering for St. Margaret's House forward at the offertory. We also encourage children to sign up to become acolytes and lectors and junior sacristans. We will also - once again - print lectionary-themed activity sheets for Pre-K and Elementary aged children. Any other thoughts on how to include children in worship are absolutely welcome.

  3. A Children's Newsletter. Fr. Mark will send out a monthly newsletter directly to children (whose parents opt in to this mailing) that focuses on four basic aspects of a Christian "rule of life": Scripture, Prayer, Worship, and Stewardship. Do you want your child to receive the children's newsletter? Click here to send an email to Fr. Mark.

This is where we are beginning this fall. I invite all of us, as a community of faith, to continue to consider our ministry with children.

Blessings,
Brian

Collect for Proper 18

Grant us, O Lord, to trust in you with all our hearts; for, as you always resist the proud who confide in their own strength, so you never forsake those who make their boast of your mercy; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
