Palm Sunday & Holy Week
April 13, 2025
The Dean's List
Holy Week
Holy Week starts tomorrow with the Liturgy of the Palms, Passion Gospel reading, and Holy Eucharist on Palm Sunday. Palm Sunday begins by recounting Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem, then moves quickly to Jesus' passion and death on the cross. Much of what we cover on Palm Sunday is repeated during the Triduum - the sacred three days we know as Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday - leading up to Easter Sunday. The services on those three days allow us to focus more closely on various aspects of Jesus' betrayal, passion, and death in real time, if you will, which is a powerful way to contemplate the depth of God's love as Jesus carries it all the way to the end.
The other reason for the reading of the Passion Gospel on Palm Sunday, though, is much more practical and, in the age we live in, pretty important. While all Christians are invited - and <ahem> expected - to attend the services of the Triduum, it has probably always been the case that attendance at weekday services is somewhat less than Sunday. For many, then, omitting the Passion Gospel on Palm Sunday would mean going from triumph to triumph; from the glory, laud, and honor of Jesus' entry into Jerusalem to hailing the festival day of resurrection with no contemplation whatsoever on the unfathomable depth of God's love as witnessed in Jesus' passion and death. There were many in Jesus' day who were impressed by miracles and dazzled by power but deaf to the message. Our Holy Week liturgies are our church's attempt to walk the whole road with Jesus.
Please join us.
Construction
In the infamous words of Maxwell Smart, "Missed it by that much." In this particular case, we barely missed having use of the elevator for Palm Sunday by one day. Inspection of our elevator, along with a tutorial on how to operate the wee beastie, will take place on Monday, April 14. Once done, we will be granted a temporary license until the paperwork for the elevator can be filed (and a fee paid, of course) with the Indiana Department of Homeland Security which, for some reason, is the agency responsible for certifying lifts, escalators, and elevators.
The last things to be completed in the addition are electronics. The new doors still need to be wired and equipped for remote opening and automatic operation; the alarm keypad needs to be moved to the addition; our security camera system is being relocated and expanded; and we are adding additional capacity for data ports (we've maxed out our current switch) and installing an internet firewall.
Meanwhile, in Cathedral Hall... our new storage closets have now been framed in, lighted, and drywall hanging has begun. Matthew Worns took a sledge hammer to the old concrete faux fireplace and he, along with Kirk Philippsen, carried out the rubble in buckets. And our in-house crew began removing the chair rail and baseboards so that we can cover the old paneling with drywall for a new, smooth wainscotting around the room. And then... The Cathedral was built in 1894 on a stone foundation that was susceptible to groundwater seepage. The walls in Cathedral Hall were added, it stands to reason, around 1924. Water seeped through that wall onto the floor in Cathedral Hall for decades any time we had a significant rainfall. Last year, the gap between the foundation and the sidewalk in the courtyard was covered with concrete, which seems to have solves the water problem. However, when the baseboards were removed, we discovered that the bottom plate of the south wall (which is non-load bearing, btw) is pretty much gone. Additionally, it appears we've been feeding insects for awhile. So that job is going to be a lot more involved and will take a bit longer. We're hoping for a mid-summer completion at this point. In the meantime, Cathedral Hall will remain closed as a gathering space.
Buildings & Grounds Committee
One more call for anyone interested in serving on a Buildings & Grounds Committee to help manage the many tasks of caring for our facilities. The essential tasks of a B&G Committee are advance planning, task prioritization, and maintenance. This is a great committee for both planners and doers. After an anticipated flurry of meetings to get going, I anticipate quarterly meetings with occasional work days (that can be extended to the entire congregation). Please send an email my way if you are interested in learning more or signing up :)

An automatic door opener was installed on one of our main level restrooms this week thanks to a generous gift from Ann and Bill Young. We would eventually like to have automatic door openers on at least one restroom on each level.
Operator's Note: This door is set up to remain open when the restroom is not in use. To close the door, enter the restroom and push the handicap plate on the inside, then lock the door. To exit, unlock the door, and push the handicap plate.
We had quite a crew at Grille 362 this past Friday following the Noon Eucharist!
Kirk Philippsen and Matthew Worns after hauling away the rubble of the old faux fireplace in Cathedral Hall. Thanks guys!
Gratitude
Thank you so much to everyone who worked to make service for the Blessing of the Oils this past Thursday a wonderful experience for all who attended. It was a great team effort that was appreciated by all who came.
Blessings,
Brian
