The Weekend of the Fifth Sunday in Lent
April 6, 2025
The Dean's List
Dismas House of Indiana
Andee Huxhold, Executive Director of Dismas House of Indiana, will join us during announcements this coming Sunday at the 10:30 service to tell us about Dismas House's work to reintegrate into society those who have recently been released from incarceration. We will also present the Cathedral's gift of our first quarter Care & Share Outreach in support of their amazing work.
Dismas House will hold their 38th Annual Benefit Dinner & Auction on Wednesday, April 23 at the Gillespie Center. The keynote speaker will be Jamie Campbell Bower, a multi-talented performer with many stage and screen credits, including Anthony in Sweeney Todd, Caius in the Twilight series, and - most importantly in my household - the Friendly Orderly and Vecna in Stranger Things. While dinner tickets are sold out, you can still sign up for a photo op with Mr. Bower for $50 or support Dismas House by your contributions.
Assistance Day
This past Wedensday, April 2, was assistance day at the Cathedral of Saint James, that day upon which we distribute $50 checks to those in need. Technically the office opens at 9 am, but during colder weather we try to get here earlier because people start lining up as early as 6:30 am. While torrential rains limited the crowd size this week, when Kirk Philippsen and I arrived at 8 am, the line already had almost as many people in it as we could help (25) this month. Nevertheless, they were of good cheer and quite patient as we crowded them into the conference room to get everyone out of the weather.
I kept thinking to myself, "All these people stood out there in the cold and pouring rain for $50?" It is instructive to me, not to mention humbling.
Thank you, Cathedral community, for making this ministry possible. I think I would like in the future to offer a simple breakfast on Assistance Day, too, so that even those in line beyond our ability to help financially will be offered something. Let me know what you think.
Story & Song
The Story & Song retreat two weekends ago was spiritually impactful and uplifting. When we honor one another with honest sharing and careful listening, the Holy Spirit works to connect us in faith, hope, and love. That sounds obvious, yet church sometimes feels like the last place where we can be open about who we are and what's actually going on in our lives. Those who were able to attend the retreat invested time considering where God's story is intersecting with their own story, were willing to work hard and take direction in the craft of storytelling, and trusted one another with their stories.
Over the next several months, Fr. Mark Hummell and I will create space in Adult Forum and Sunday Worship for storytelling. Those who feel called will be able to share their story with the broader congregation in order to foster more meaningful relationships and inspire deeper reflection and connection within the Body of Christ. It will also, hopefully, inspire others to tell their stories of where and how God is at work right in our midst.
For further consideration and to serve as inspiration, please check out The Dove Faith Cafe and Fr. Tom Adamson's A Song and A Friend podcast:

Construction
We are almost down to a punch list. Construction on the addition is complete, with only odds and ends of electronics and clean-up of a whole lot of dust remaining. Inspections happen very soon. This coming week will feature the removal of gravel from our lot, then grading and topsoil.
Buildings & Grounds Committee
We are assembling a Buildings & Grounds Committee to help manage the many tasks of caring for our facilities. The essential tasks of a B&G Committee are advance planning, task prioritization, and maintenance. This is a great committee for both planners and doers. After an anticipated flurry of meetings to get going, I anticipate quarterly meetings with occasional work days (that can be extended to the entire congregation). Please send an email my way if you are interested in learning more or signing up :)
Photos
Weather was the story of the week. I heard of many near-misses with fallen trees and a few extended power outages, but - for the most part - it sounds like the Cathedral congregation came through without too much damage.
Sadie didn't care much for that weather map. Not one bit.
Our neighbor's tree was no match for 80+ mph winds. Little did we know in that moment that things were much worse than this throughout the area.
The lobby in the new addition is just about done!
Blessings,
Brian
Opportunities & Events
Luncheon Reception
The Cathedral will host clergy and laity from the Dioceses of Northern Indiana and Indianapolis and the Missouri-Kentucky Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America this coming Thursday. Unfortunately, Cathedral Hall will not quite be company ready, so our after-service luncheon for about 50 people will take place at the back of the Church. Betsy VanderBurg is coordinating the meal, but could use contributions of vegetable trays and desserts, with gluten-free and nut-free options to accommodate our guests. She could also use a hand with set-up, service, and clean-up. Betsy asks that you please call her with offers to contribute or help. If you need her number, please call or email me: (574) 232-4837 or dean@stjamessouthbend.org.

Cathedral Prayer List
Collect for the Fifth Sunday in Lent
April 6
Almighty God, you alone can bring into order the unruly wills and affections of sinners: Grant your people grace to love what you command and desire what you promise; that, among the swift and varied changes of the world, our hearts may surely there be fixed where true joys are to be found; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
