The Weekend of the Second Sunday of Easter

The Dean's List

Happy Easter!

Bishop Doug Sparks & Mr. Jack Consolie
We are already one week in to the Great 50 Days of the Easter season. Our worship for the second Sunday of Easter will feature Bishop Doug Sparks as the presider at both services and Mr. Jack Consolie, a senior seminarian at the Moreau Seminary at the University of Notre Dame, as our preacher. I, myself, might sit in the pews to see what that's like :) Welcome, Bishop Doug and Jack!

Kay Brubaker Funeral
On Friday evening we remembered, honored, and celebrated the life of Kay Brubaker and commended her into the arms of Jesus in a private family service at the Cathedral. Kay was interred in the Cathedral columbarium next to her husband, Tom, who died in 2014. Kay was 101 years old at the time of her death.

Holy Eucharist: Expansive Language
Amid the myriad things going on around the Cathedral throughout Lent and Holy Week, I don't believe I explained very well the changes to our 10:30 liturgy that we rolled out on Easter Sunday.

At the request of many members of our congregation, and after consultation with the Cathedral Chapter, we have embarked upon a season in which we will use the Expansive Language rites for Holy Eucharist that have been authorized by the General Convention of the Episcopal Church since 2022. These rites are a continuation of the work towards inclusive language begun in the 1980s in a series called Enriching Our Worship. Expansive language seeks to use gender neutral terms in reference to God where gendered terms are not necessary. Principally, this happens with the word Lord and the word Father, particularly where Father stands alone outside of the Trinitarian formula. The word Christ also stands in for the pronoun him when referring to Jesus' Messianic character more than his embodied humanity.

Changing the language by which we pray can be unsettling. Minimally, it takes us out of familiar patterns and cadences in ways that can be a bit jarring. New language in liturgy can also challenge our conceptions and understandings of ultimate things, stretching us in ways that may be uncomfortable. And that is the point of the exercise. The expansive language rites have been authorized for trial use in order that congregations might pray through them, worship with them, and evaluate them to see what works and what does not; what inspires and broadens and elevates, and what falls flat or misses the mark..

In order to know any of that, though, we have to give it time. The Chapter and I agreed that we will use expansive language for an extended season, using Eucharist Prayer B: Expansive Language through Trinity Sunday (June 15), then switch to Eucharistic Prayer A: Expansive Language through the end of August. During that time, we will schedule at least two Sunday morning adult forums to discuss the rites and offer feedback. Please note that we will continue to use the Prayer Book rites at 8:00 am on Sundays and at Noon on Fridays.

Blessing the New Building
In a flash of inspiration, it occurred to me that the very best day in the entire Christian year to bless a new elevator would - of course - be Ascension Day. As it turns out, the bishop is otherwise occupied that day, but can be with us for a blessing and celebration on the Eve of Ascension: Wednesday, May 28. Watch for more information coming soon!

Blessings,
Brian

Almighty and everlasting God, who in the Paschal mystery established the new covenant of reconciliation: Grant that all who have been reborn into the fellowship of Christ's Body may show forth in their lives what they profess by their faith; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
