Urgent Prayer Need
Prayers, please for Gideon, 20-year-old cousin of Steven Mast, who is in critical condition following a suicide attempt. May Jesus heal him in body, mind, and spirit. Please pray for Steven, Fred & Kate Mast, and their whole family, as well.
Off to Minnesota!
Tamisyn and I are in Minneapolis this weekend for the wedding of Jesse Grantz and Katelyn Langwith. I will be back in the office on Wednesday, May 28, just in time for the big dedication soiree!
Fr. Mark Hummell will preside and preach this Sunday, with assistance from Deacon Anne Wietstock at the ambo* and altar. Deacon Clay Berkley will be joining Bishop Doug Sparks for his visitation at St. Augustine's Church in Gary this weekend.
* Ambo comes from a Greek word meaning pulpit or reading stand. It's equivalent Latin derivative is podium.
Chapter Notes
The Cathedral Chapter had good discussions at their Tuesday meeting on a wide range of subjects, including these four:
Assistance Ministry. Following the recommendation of the Finance Committee, the Chapter voted to transfer the remaining balance of $1,218.49 from the Shoe Tree Project fund - which is no longer needed - to the Clergy Discretionary Fund in support of our monthly Assistance Ministry. We also discussed an experiment being undertake by Norris & Al Whitfield to provide boxed breakfasts to those who gather on assistance day (the first Wednesday of each month). Norris brought prototype boxes this past Sunday that include a muffin, a breakfast slider sandwich, applesauce, and a small bottle of water. We are checking with the Health Department for any possible considerations, but we hope to pilot this effort on June 4.
Christian Formation for Children. While Christian formation programs and events for adults and youth are going quite well, participation in children's formation has been more of a challenge. The Cathedral's children are served by a faithful and capable complement of leaders, for whose ministry we are very grateful. Fr. Mark Hummell and I will be working with leaders and parents and all other interested parties over the summer to learn about what parents and children need and how we might approach this immensely important and fundamental project better or differently. First thoughts from Chapter: children's formation concurrent with 10:30 am worship; materials and encouragement for faith formation at home; special monthly events specifically for children.
Outdoor Art. The Cathedral Chapter first began discussion of an outdoor art installation in April of last year. Two Sundays ago I was approached by a local artist about the possibility of a mural on the large, blank, south-facing brick wall to the left of our new addition, which rekindled this conversation. The Garden subcommittee of the Gather & Grow project is working on installation of a labyrinth as the central feature of the revitalized garden, but the dream for this new art - whether a mural or a sculpture or something we haven't imagined yet - would capture a spirit of welcome, perhaps rooted in Jesus' words, "Come to me, all you that are weary and carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest." (Matthew 11:28). There are many things to consider in this project. We need an ad hoc Task Group that will get a sense of what the congregation (and St. Margaret's House and the City of South Bend) wants and how it might come to life. If you are interested in some interesting, creative work, please let me know!
Chapter Changes. Senior Warden Liz Burman will be joining her husband, Tom, for his sabbatical year away beginning this fall. In accordance with our by-laws, Chapter Member Hal Culbertson was elected to fulfill Liz's unexpired term as Senior Warden from September 1, 2025 through February 28, 2026. In turn, Chris Gibson was elected by Chapter to serve Hal Culbertson's unexpired Chapter term from September through February. I will say much more about this later, but many thanks to Liz for her leadership during an extraordinary period of growth and change at the Cathedral, and thank you to Hal and Chris for their willingness to serve the Cathedral in new ways.
Blessings,
Brian

Blessing . Holy Eucharist . Pot Luck Supper . Elevator Music
Join us at 6 pm in the Burkhart-Miller Atrium inside our new entrance to begin the evening. With Bishop Doug Sparks, we will bless our new addition before proceeding to the Nave to celebrate the Eve of the Ascension of Jesus Christ into heaven on the 40th day after his Resurrection. Following the Eucharist, we will return to the atrium to continue our celebrations.
The Cathedral will provide cake for the occasion. We invite you to bring your choice of main dish, side dish, or salad to our potluck. You may sign up in church this Sunday or by using this link.
See you there!

Collect for the Sixth Sunday of Easter
May 25
O God, you have prepared for those who love you such good things as surpass our understanding: Pour into our hearts such love towards you, that we, loving you in all things and above all things, may obtain your promises, which exceed all that we can desire; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

God of power and mercy, you destroy war and put down earthly pride. Banish violence from our midst and wipe away our tears. Keep in your mercy those men and women who have died in the cause of freedom and hold them in your kingdom of justice and peace. We ask this though Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
