The Dean's List

Back to Minnesota
The wedding of Jesse & Katelyn Grantz in Minneapolis last weekend was an absolutely lovely, fun affair. The bride and groom were  the convergence of relatives and friends from nearly every major phase of our lives was both a bit surreal and altogether wonderful.

Unfortunately, when arriving at the wedding venue, my mother took a head-first tumble over a curb into the street, fracturing her C1 vertebrae and causing a minor brain bleed. She was admitted to the ICU at a Minneapolis hospital, and has now progressed to a Transitional Care Unit in nearby Shakopee, Minnesota.

In addition to our concern for my mother’s well-being, this situation presented quite a logistical challenge to our family as it became clear that my mother would not be able to return to her home in Delaware any time soon. On Wednesday morning, Tamisyn and I drove back to South Bend and my sister-in-law flew back to Delaware, leaving my brother and my (90-year-old) father to tend to my mother as her care plan unfolded. They returned to Delaware on Friday and I drove back to Minneapolis for the weekend to help my mother through the transition to rehab. Also instrumental in all of this is my sister-in-law - ex-wife of my estranged younger brother - who has been faithful in visiting with my mother and arranging for her admission into a well-regarded transitional care facility. When I leave for South Bend on Tuesday, she will take over the task of daily visits and advocacy. Once my mother meets whatever thresholds are necessary for safe travel, my brother and I will figure out how to get her back to Delaware.

Thank you to everyone who is stepping up to make this time with my mother possible, particularly the Cathedral staff, Canon Tina Velthuizen, and Senior Warden Liz Burman. This has been quite the predicament, but the way forward is becoming clearer and more manageable, and the prayers and support of the Cathedral community have everything to do with that.

Blessings,
Brian
