The Prayers of the (Poor) People
Our monthly Assistance Day took place this past Wednesday. As usual, there were far more people in line hoping for financial help than we had the ability to provide, many of whom arrived in the wee hours in order to be near the front of the line.
We distributed $1,400 to 28 people in $50 increments.
Our men's fellowship group also handed out nearly 50 boxed breakfasts. Many thanks to Al Whitfield, Michael Anand-Obleton, Chris Gibson, Ed Randles, and Joe Anand-Obleton (and Pup!) - with a behind-the-scenes assist from Norris Whitfield - for making that ministry happen.
This time - because we were better organized and had plenty of help - I had time to ask people if they had any particular prayer needs or requests. Here is what they asked for:
SA: success for a business venture; KM: peace and prosperity for the world; AJ: for her babies, for housing stability, for her mom, who is paralyzed; WM: help with rent, positive changes; JN: forgiveness, a new relationship; GH: for family, for his children, for our country; MV: health; no cancer (is currently trying to get treatment for what may be cancer); JH: for his kids, for health, for a nice life; PB: for her son, who is incarcerated; for family; TM: for housing; for his deceased father; for his memory; for a better life; DN: for peace (personal, societal, and world); DM: peace of mind, body, and soul; QB: healing for stab wounds, a better life, find a home; CS: keep her house; DH: finances; RW: for his elderly mother; RW: for her sister, who recently died, and for grief; AK: world peace; JW: sister in jail; TF: housing; AS: for work; KW: depression.
Our ministry with the poor - proverbial drop in the bucket though it may be - is important, undoubtedly as much for us as it is for them. Their lives are hard, and I fear they are about to get harder. This connection with the broader community matters.
Cathedral Hall Progress
Plaster work in Cathedral Hall is done (or nearly so), which should bring the undercroft dust bowl to an end. Next up: our in-house work crew will begin trim work and painting. The projected completion date is the end of July.
Office Entrance Door Progress
Our electrician is scheduled to be here this coming Monday (July 7) to - at long last - connect our door openers to a power source. This past week we authorized BIT Inc. to add two door activation plates inside the vestibule so that no one who uses a wheelchair or walker can get stuck in there accidentally. This seems reasonable to us. That work will happen - hopefully - the week of July 14. Please keep this all in prayer... this last project has just seemed way too complicated. Our instructions to contractors of late boil down to this: "Whatever it takes, just get it done, please and thank you."
