The Dean's List

Hither & Yon Season
The next few weeks sees staff members coming and going for vacations, conferences, and whatever else we get up to in the summertime. Here's the rundown:

  • Canon Joe Anand-Obleton will end an excursion from his escritoire this coming Tuesday.

  • Fr. Mark Hummell is suspending his sacerdotal stint this weekend.

  • Dr. Steven Wietstock has booked a breather from the bench this weekend and next weekend.

  • Deacon Anne Wietstock is dropping her diaconal duties next weekend.

  • Dean Brian Grantz is pausing his pastoral pursuits beginning this Thursday, July 30. He will resume his regular role on Friday, August 21.

Fr. Mark Hummell, Deacon Anne Wietstock, and Deacon Clay Berkley will be available in the event of urgent pastoral need during my absence.

Canon Terri Bays
This past Thursday, the Standing Committee of the Diocese of the Great Lakes announced a slate of three candidates for bishop. Included on the slate is Canon Terri Bays. A two week open period for nomination by petition now follows. The Diocese will host opportunities to get to know the candidates this fall leading up to their electing Convention on Saturday, October 24. Please keep Canon Terri, the other candidates, and the Diocese of the Great Lakes in your prayers.

Honorary Canons
This Saint James Sunday we are pleased to welcome Mr. John Beatty and Mrs. Linda Buskirk, both members of Trinity Episcopal Church, Fort Wayne, for their official seating as Honorary Canons of the Cathedral of Saint James. Honorary Canons are nominated by the Bishop and the Dean and elected by the Cathedral Chapter in recognition of exceptional service and long-standing dedication to the life and ministry of the Church throughout our diocese. Canon Beatty's remarkable service as diocesan historian and archivist and Canon Buskirk's leadership in fostering stewardship, developing lay leadership, and guiding capital fundraising efforts exemplify the faithful and generous use of the gifts of the Holy Spirit for the building up of Christ's Church. We are honored to welcome Canon Beatty and Canon Buskirk to the Chapter of the Cathedral of Saint James and give thanks for their ministry among us.

Thank You, Kirk!
Stewardship of a 132-year-old building is no mean feat; one never knows what is going to require attention next. This week alone we have had people working on the steps to Cathedral Hall (thank you, Eric McManus!), plaster and paint to repair water damage, replacement of the electrical panel in the office building after a too-close call, and meetings with our architects to discuss a replacement ramp for wheelchair accessibility in the event that our elevator is unavailable some Sunday morning. (There is nothing wrong with the elevator right now, but it is basically a computer-controlled, wall-crawling box, so it is inevitable that it will require maintenance in the future). So, when you see Kirk, please thank him for his service to the Cathedral above and beyond the call.

Requiescat in Pace: Carol Albright
Carol Albright - a member of the Cathedral with her husband, Judge William Albright, and their family many years ago - died this past Saturday following an illness. May her soul, and the souls of all the departed, through the mercy of God rest in peace, and may light perpetual shine upon her.

I will preside at her funeral service this coming Wednesday, July 30, at Palmer Funeral Home River Park Chapel beginning at 11 am. Interment will follow at Cedar Grove Cemetery at the University of Notre Dame.

Blessings,
Brian

The Feast of Saint James

Need to pick up your ticket(s)? Meet Fr. Brian in the Cathedral parking lot
before the game between 6:15 pm and 6:30 pm.

Pot Luck Tailgate Picnic Details

  • Burgers and Hot Dogs and Brats. (Oh my!) We'll fire up the Cathedral's mongo grill to cook up picnic fare, plus a vegetarian option (most likely black bean burgers). We will also provide soft drinks, iced tea, and water.

  • As you are able, please bring a side dish, salad, or dessert to share. If you need to put it in the refrigerator during the 10:30 service, we will have "runners" at the Cathedral main entrance to take items downstairs.

  • Bring your favorite tailgate chair, plus any horizontal surface you may desire to place your plate on.

  • We will have yard games, including corn hole, giant checkers, and sidewalk chalk, plus a face-painting table.

  • Thank you to everyone who has volunteered to help with set up, run food to and from the kitchen, cook, and clean up! If you would like to lend a hand, please let Tamisyn Grantz know.

  • If it is too hot, too wet, or too smoky to be outside, we will move the tailgate to Cathedral Hall and the set up the games (minus sidewalk chalk) in the youth rooms.

Prayer List

Collect for the Feast of Saint James

O gracious God, we remember before you today your servant and apostle James, first among the Twelve to suffer martyrdom for the Name of Jesus Christ; and we pray that you will pour out upon the leaders of your Church that spirit of self-denying service by which alone they may have true authority among your people; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.  Amen.
