A huge and heartfelt shout out to everyone who helped make our Saint James Weekend celebration wonderful. It was a fun and meaningful weekend all around!

Not Appearing in This Liturgy
Dean Brian Grantz, Deacon Anne Wietstock, and Dr. Steven Wietstock will all be absent from the Cathedral on Sunday, August 2. Fr. Mark Hummell will preside and preach, Mr. Paul Hochstetler will ascend the organ bench, and Deacon Clay Berkley will do all the diaconal duties. The Wietstocks will be back next Sunday. The Dean will return on Friday, August 21.

Assistance Ministry
August 5, being the first Wednesday of the month, is the day we open our doors to offer breakfast for sixty people, monetary assistance for thirty people, and prayer for whoever wants us to pray with them. A very generous gift this past month will enable us to continue this ministry at least through January 2027 at our current level. For everyone’s safety and security, we have also entered an agreement with St. Margaret’s House to share the cost of hiring an off-duty South Bend police officer to be present from 6 am to 10 am on Assistance Day. This was tremendously helpful last month both to us and to the officer who spent time developing positive relationships with those in line.

The Fellowship of St. John does wonderful work in preparing for and staffing Assistance Day. That said, more volunteers are needed from 8 am—10 am on Wednesday. If you would like to lend a hand with this important work, please contact Joe Anand-Obleton.

An Odd Tidbit
There’s really no reason for you to know this, but nearly all of the Cathedral’s printed materials for the past thirty years or so are produced on Microsoft Publisher. Under the rubric that there is a time for every matter under heaven, for various reasons Publisher is being put out to pasture come October 1, 2026. This means that our decades old archive of newsletters, bulletins, inserts, signs, and sign-up sheets are not only about to be obsolete, they are about to be inaccessible. So, two things:

All of our documents will soon be produced using MS Word, at least for now. Because Word handles graphics a little differently than Publisher, our documents are going to look a little different.
We need to convert pub files to pdf in order to archive them in an accessible format. This isn’t hard to do, just a bit time consuming. If you are interested in an important volunteer gig from now through the end of September, we could use your help :)

Prayer Service to End ICE Detention
at Miami Correctional Facility

Dear Friends in Faith,

The weekend of August 28th, 29th, & 30th, Hoosiers across Indiana are rising in a powerful, unified public witness with a goal of holding 50+ prayer vigils to end the crisis of ICE detention at the Miami Correctional Facility. Right now, our state is holding approximately 600 immigrant men—the vast majority of whom have no criminal record—inside a state-run, maximum-security prison plagued by a staffing shortage, lack of medical care, and a tragic record of two detainee deaths earlier this year. While officials promise “built-in profit” on a contract that appears to have actually lost taxpayer money, local families are being torn apart, leaving traumatized U.S. citizen children and spouses in a desperate scramble for basic survival. Since Miami Correctional is a state-run facility, this injustice belongs to every Hoosier.

You are invited to participate in a prayer service at St. Peter’s United Church of Christ in South Bend on Sunday, August 30 beginning at 4pm.

This prayer service is one of many public witness events being held across Indiana that weekend, as people of faith come together to say clearly: Detention and inhumane treatment of our immigrant neighbors must end.

For the Episcopal Diocese of Wisconsin as they begin a discernment process for selecting their next Bishop in the wake of the announced retirement of Bishop Matthew Gunter.
For Canon Terri Bays as she enters a period of discernment as one of three candidates from which the recently formed Diocese of the Great Lakes will elect their first bishop. We pray for her, for her family, and for their diocese and our own as this process moves forward. Come, Holy Spirit!
For the people of Venezuela as they attempt to recover from two massive earthquakes and for all the emergency responders and aid workers providing assistance.
For protection of the lives of immigrants and for the families and communities mourning the killings of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo and Joan Sebastian Guerrero.
For an end to wars and for a lasting Peace in all regions of the world, especially in Iran (and the surrounding regions) and in Ukraine.
