here in the World?
I am in Edinburgh, Scotland today with my brother and two of my Glenn family cousins. This particular pilgrimage was a bucket-list item for my older brother, David, who has long desired to attend the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, which we will do tomorrow. God willing and the airlines consenting, I will be back at the Cathedral this coming Friday, albeit jet-lagged.

Will you continue in the Apostles’ teaching and fellowship…?
A follow-up shout out from the first promise of our Baptismal Covenant. The experience of God through the person of Jesus Christ is—we repeat the sounding joy every Christmas—incarnational. Jesus is Emmanuel, God With Us, both in the sense of “Hey, I’m with you,” and in the sense of God being manifest, present in the flesh, tangible, and real. God is relational, and thus works in and through our relationships with one another. In a profound sense, relationship is the basis for God’s revelation and perhaps the single-most important thing the Church has to offer. So we’ll be working on encouraging opportunities for fellowship within the Saint James community as a priority this year. Got an idea? Please share it :)

Guest Celebrant at the 10:30 am Eucharist
The Rev. Timothy Dombek, our celebrant at the 10:30 Eucharist this Sunday, joined the Cathedral of St. James in 1984 by Letter of Transfer from St. Anne’s, Warsaw, shortly after his confirmation by Bishop William C.R. Sheridan. He served as lector, Eucharistic minister, and acolyte, entering the discernment process for ordination in 1986. In the fall of 1989, the Cathedral sponsored him to attend Seabury-Western Theological Seminary in Evanston, Illinois.
   In June 1990, Timothy married Beth Bittner at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Melbourne, Florida — a parish previously served by Bishop Frank Gray as rector.  
   Bishop Gray ordained him to the transitional diaconate here at the Cathedral of St. James on April 25, 1992, and to the priesthood that December 9 at Church of the Transfiguration in Dallas, TX, where Timothy served as Family Life Minister and Chaplain to the Parish Day School. The Dombeks’ only child, Jonathan, was born in Dallas the following year.
   Beginning in 1996, Timothy went on to serve congregations and schools in the Diocese of Upper South Carolina: chaplain at Heathwood Hall Episcopal School, Columbia, priest-in-charge at St.       Barnabas, Jenkinsville, and Rector of St. James, Greenville, before Bishop Kirk Smith called him to the Episcopal Diocese of Arizona in 2007 as Canon to the Ordinary. 
   In 2013, Bishop Smith appointed Canon Timothy as Canon for Stewardship and Planned Giving, leading stewardship workshops in more than 20 dioceses across The Episcopal Church. In September 2016, he returned to parish ministry as Rector of Church of the Advent in Sun City West, Arizona, retiring on December 31, 2023, completing 31 and a half years of ministry and service to the Church.
   Today marks the first time Canon Timothy has celebrated the Eucharist at the Cathedral of St. James — the congregation that sponsored him for ordained ministry.

Prayer Service to End ICE Detention
at Miami Correctional Facility

Dear Friends in Faith,

The weekend of August 28th, 29th, & 30th, Hoosiers across Indiana are rising in a powerful, unified public witness with a goal of holding 50+ prayer vigils to end the crisis of ICE detention at the Miami Correctional Facility. Right now, our state is holding approximately 600 immigrant men—the vast majority of whom have no criminal record—inside a state-run, maximum-security prison plagued by a staffing shortage, lack of medical care, and a tragic record of two detainee deaths earlier this year. While officials promise “built-in profit” on a contract that appears to have actually lost taxpayer money, local families are being torn apart, leaving traumatized U.S. citizen children and spouses in a desperate scramble for basic survival. Since Miami Correctional is a state-run facility, this injustice belongs to   every Hoosier. 

You are invited to participate in a prayer service at St. Peter’s United Church of Christ in South Bend on Sunday, August 30 beginning at 4pm.

This prayer service is one of many public witness events being held across Indiana that weekend, as people of faith come together to say clearly: Detention and inhumane treatment of our immigrant neighbors must end.
