The Weekend of The Seventh Sunday after Pentecost

Saint James Sunday

The Dean's List

Saint James Sunday
The Cathedral of Saint James celebrates our patronal feast this weekend with special celebrations of the Holy Eucharist on Sunday. At 8 o'clock we will dust off the service of Holy Communion from the 1789 Book of Common Prayer which was in use when The Episcopal Church in South Bend was established in 1867 (renamed Saint James Protestant Episcopal Church in 1868). The 10:30 am celebration will continue our use of Rite Two: Expansive Language based on the 1979 Book of Common Prayer, with all hymns coming from the latter half of the 1800s, including an opening medley featuring For All the Saints, At the Name of Jesus, The Church's One Foundation, and Alleluia! Sing to Jesus.

You, too, can get in the spirit of the day by wearing period costume from the 1800s or by getting gussied up for church in your Sunday best (like we did in the olden days :)

Back Home Again...
Thank you to the entire extended Cathedral community for your prayers and concern about my mother, Janet Grantz. My last-minute trip to Delaware the past weekend was important and worthwhile in spending time with both of my parents and my brother and sister-in-law, assessing my mother's condition, and taking part in a care team conference. The long and short of it is that my mother's health is in decline, and while the care team are still working to get her through the current health crisis, she, herself, is not having a lot of fun in life right now. We had some significant conversations, some good laughs, singing (by me - Mom physically can't and the others are pitch challenged), and prayer. And I had time to pray about and reflect upon the transitory nature of this life as we approach a day in our family that we always knew was coming and always hope is further away. So now, as I have with countless families through my years in ministry, we watch and wait.

Reasons to Rejoice

  • Two people in our congregation recently discovered that initial medical diagnoses of serious issues were discovered upon further examination to be far less serious than initially thought. Thanks be to God!

  • Josh Henderson - brother of Chris Henderson and youngest son of Clayton & Elizabeth Henderson - learned that treatments for glioblastoma have been successful in halting the spread of the disease, with a recent MRI showing no tumor progression or new tumors. He will continue a course of chemotherapy over the next six months. Please keep Josh, his wife Katie, and the whole Henderson family in your prayers.

  • Finish carpentry work in Cathedral Hall is almost done! The Cathedral Carpentry Crew anticipates being at the caulk and paint stage by the end of this coming week. The transformation is unbelievable! A professional floor finisher has been retained to buff up the terrazzo floor once construction and painting is complete.

Cathedral Prayer List

Collect for Proper 12

O God, the protector of all who trust in you, without whom nothing is strong, nothing is holy: Increase and multiply upon us your mercy; that, with you as our ruler and guide, we may so pass through things temporal, that we lose not the things eternal; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Collect for Saint James the Apostle
O gracious God, we remember before you today your servant and apostle James, first among the Twelve to suffer martyrdom for the Name of Jesus Christ; and we pray that you will pour out upon the leaders of your Church that spirit of self-denying service by which alone they may have true authority among your people; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
